IONM reduces neurological risks.

Neuromonitoring is a valuable tool that helps keep patients safe, and the numbers back up that claim.

Researchers examined data from low-risk spinal surgeries in the National (Nationwide) Inpatient Sample, the largest all-payer dataset of inpatient hospitalizations in the US, for the years 2007 to 2012. They weighed the results of 10,867 monitored surgeries against 223,200 non-monitored surgeries and discovered a significant reduction of complications for spinal decompression and simple fusion procedures with patients who underwent intraoperative neuromonitoring during their surgeries.

“Spinal decompressions and fusions are among the most widely performed and costly surgeries in the United States, carrying a small but real chance of neural injury, with profound consequences for patient quality of life and health care costs,” the study authors wrote in their paper, published in Neurology Today.
