Despite the fact that neurosurgery is critical to treating a variety of medical conditions — from brain tumors and strokes to aneurysms, disorders of the spine and more — many people don’t know much about it.

For one thing, many think that neurosurgery simply refers to brain surgery — and while it does include brain surgery, it also encompasses much more. The term is actually short for neurological surgery, and it involves the diagnosis and treatment of disorders or injuries that affect any part of the nervous system, including the brain, spine, cervical spine (neck) and nerves throughout the body.
